Honorable Mention
Broadway Harry’s on Beach 28 St.
Charles Levenstein

Broadway Harry’s on Beach 28 St.

Sun-burned Harry, peddler’s voice lusty
and loud, body red and strong with sex,
drew the summer women, pale husbands
working worried back in Brooklyn.

I learned to sweep the wooden floor
without raising clouds of dust, a skill
useful in later life to dampen temper
and impatience. Even more,

he taught me to display oranges
turned carefully in the box so navels
were concealed; to shave watermelons
so they were fresh to ladies’ eyes;
to bounce a bag of peaches on the scale.

The special fruit – exotic mangos
from distant Puerto Rico.
Each day he’d open one,
offer a sliver, a special taste
for dark eyes.
She who bought today
returned tomorrow,
kept the dream alive.
